Short biography of Sushmita Bandyopadhyay

Sushmita Bandyopadhyay was born in 1964 to a Hindu Brahmin family in Calcutta. On July 2, 1986, she secretly married an Afghan named Janbaz Khan in Calcutta. When her parents found out about the marriage, they asked her to divorce him and she went to Afghanistan with Janbaz. But there she discovered that she had married a woman named Gulguti before her husband. Despite this, she stayed at Khan’s family home in the village of Patiya. As a midwife trained in midwifery, she opened a health center for the women of that village.

Sushmita Bandyopadhyay (nicknamed Syeda Kamala) (died 4th September 2013) was an Indian writer. From his experience of living in Afghanistan under Taliban rule after marrying an Afghan, he wrote a memoir in 1996 entitled The Bengali Wife of Kabuliwala. He was shot dead by Taliban militants on September 4, 2013, at the age of 49 in Afghanistan’s Paktika province.
